Files by Google: what to know before installing

Files by Google is Google’s Android file-management app for finding, organizing, sharing, protecting, and clearing files. It is most useful when you want a simple view of local storage before deciding what to remove.

Best fit: People who need straightforward file browsing, storage cleanup suggestions, Quick Share, SD-card management, or a protected Safe folder.

May not fit: People whose built-in file manager already covers their needs, or who do not want to grant another app access to local files. If you are deciding whether the built-in option is enough, compare the practical trade-offs in our file-manager decision guide.

What it does well

  • Searches and browses photos, videos, documents, downloads, and other local files.
  • Shows cleanup suggestions for downloads, duplicates, large files, unused apps, and other storage categories.
  • Moves or copies files between internal storage, supported SD cards, USB storage, and available cloud apps.
  • Shares nearby files through Quick Share and can protect selected files with a separate Safe folder lock.

Safety and privacy checks

File-management access is central to the app’s purpose, so review the requested permissions and confirm that the developer is Google LLC. Treat every cleanup suggestion as a recommendation—not an instruction—and preview important files before moving them to Trash or deleting them.

Safe folder is useful for local protection, but it is not a complete backup system. Google warns that resetting Safe folder or handling its encrypted files incorrectly can make the contents inaccessible. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files.

What to know before installing

Files by Google combines several everyday tools, but you may not need it if your device maker’s file manager already meets your needs. Features and storage locations can vary by Android version and hardware. Install from the official Google Play listing and review its current Data safety section for your region and use.
