Google Authenticator: what to know before installing

Google Authenticator generates time-based verification codes for accounts that support authenticator-app two-step verification, including when the phone has no internet or mobile service. It is useful only after each account has been enrolled; installing the app alone does not protect an account.

What it does

  • Requires Android 6.0 or later and generates rotating one-time codes.
  • In Authenticator version 7.0 and later, the former time-correction control is unavailable; the app uses the operating system’s time, so an incorrect device clock can make codes fail.
  • Works offline after an account is enrolled.
  • Can sync codes to a Google Account when you sign in to Authenticator.
  • Can transfer accounts manually by exporting from the old device and importing on the new one.

Decide how you will recover before enrolling

If you use account sync, protect the Google Account itself and keep its recovery information current. If you use Authenticator without signing in, plan a manual transfer before replacing or resetting the phone. For every important service, also store the service’s recovery codes or another approved recovery method somewhere separate from the phone.

Set up one account at a time

  1. Open the security settings of the account you want to protect.
  2. Choose its authenticator-app or verification-code option.
  3. Scan the QR code or enter the setup key in Google Authenticator.
  4. Enter the current code back into the service to finish enrollment.
  5. Save that service’s recovery codes before signing out.

Important limitations

Authenticator codes prove possession of the enrolled secret; they do not detect a convincing phishing page. Never approve a sign-in you did not start, and never send a current code to another person. A factory reset or lost phone can lock you out if neither sync, transfer, nor a separate recovery method is available.
