Understand app permissions before installing
Check whether every requested permission matches what an app is supposed to do, then grant only the access needed for the feature you intend to use.
Decision rule: A permission should have a clear connection to a feature you understand and want to use. You can deny it now and change the setting later.
Before installing
- Confirm the app and developer through the official website or trusted app-store listing.
- Read the listing’s Data safety information, but also judge permissions when Android asks for them.
- Be cautious when a simple app requests contacts, call logs, SMS, microphone, location, or broad file access without a clear reason.
Review one app’s permissions
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then select the app. You may need See all apps.
- Tap Permissions.
- Open each permission and choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature you need, such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow.
- Test the feature. If it no longer works, reconsider only the permission directly related to it.
Review by permission type
On many Android phones, open Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Permission manager. This view helps you see every app that can access one sensitive capability, such as the camera, microphone, contacts, or location.
Restricted settings need extra caution
Android may restrict powerful settings for apps installed outside a trusted store. Do not enable a restricted setting merely because an app demands it. First verify the developer and distribution source, then confirm the genuine need; accessibility access can allow an app to read screen content and interact with other apps.
Device and version differences
Menu names and available choices vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google notes that some permission-management steps apply only to particular Android versions; use your device maker’s official support instructions when the route differs.
