Control app notifications without missing important alerts

Most notification overload is solved by changing one app or one notification category at a time—not by silencing the entire phone. Keep calls, messages, security alerts, alarms, and other time-sensitive categories enabled; silence or disable promotional and low-value categories.

Start with the notification that caused the problem

  1. Swipe down and touch and hold the notification.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. If Android shows categories, change only the relevant category. Choose alerting, silent, or off according to whether the alert needs immediate attention.

You can also open Settings → Notifications → App notifications, choose an app, and review every category it exposes. Names and menu paths vary by phone maker and Android version.

Do not turn off the categories you rely on

Before disabling a category, identify what it carries. A banking app may separate transaction alerts from marketing; a messaging app may separate direct messages from group activity. If the labels are unclear, silence the category first and confirm the result before switching it off.

Use Do Not Disturb for time, not permanent cleanup

On Android 14 and later, Modes and Do Not Disturb can limit interruptions on a schedule while allowing selected people, apps, alarms, and priority conversations. Older Android versions and manufacturer interfaces use different names and paths. This is different from disabling an app’s notification category: the category remains available when the mode ends.

If an important notification never arrives

Check the app’s notification category, Do Not Disturb exceptions, the app’s own settings, and battery restrictions. Aggressive background limits can delay some apps; use Find which apps drain your battery to investigate before removing battery controls broadly.
