Back up Android before a factory reset

A factory reset erases the phone, so verify each backup layer separately before starting: the Android device backup, photos and files, app-specific data, and access to the Google Account used on the phone. A successful “Back up now” result does not guarantee that every app or file will return.

1. Run the Android backup

On current Google-supported Android builds, open Settings → Google → All services → Backup, confirm the correct account under Account storage, and tap Back up now. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Check the completion time instead of assuming automatic backup just ran.

2. Verify photos and files separately

Open the service that stores your photos and confirm recent images are visible there. Copy Downloads, documents, recordings, exported chats, local notes, and any other irreplaceable files to another device or trusted storage. Android’s system backup does not promise to include every folder.

3. Check apps that keep their own data

Google states that not all apps back up or restore all settings and data. Review messaging apps, authenticators, password managers, games, finance apps, work profiles, eSIMs, and manufacturer tools individually. Use each developer’s documented export, sync, or transfer process where available.

4. Protect account recovery

  • Confirm the Google Account username and password on another device.
  • Keep two-step-verification backup codes or another recovery method away from the phone being erased.
  • If the Google Account password was just reset, Google advises waiting 24 hours before factory reset.
  • On Android 15 and later, check whether a wallet app offers backup for stored-value transit cards; support depends on the wallet.

5. Reset only after verifying the backup

Open a few backed-up files from the destination, confirm recent photos are present, and verify that recovery information works. Charge the phone to at least 70% and connect it to a network before the reset. Use the manufacturer’s instructions if the Settings path differs.
