Stop spam and scam calls on Android: what actually helps

You are waiting for a delivery or hospital call, but unfamiliar numbers keep interrupting you. Start with your phone’s caller-ID and spam warnings, then decide whether filtering or call screening would hide calls you need. Availability depends on your phone, country and language. No warning system can prove that a caller is genuine: for requests involving money, passwords or verification codes, end the call and contact the organisation through an independently found official number.

Turn on the basic protection first

On phones that use Phone by Google, open Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam. Keep caller ID and spam protection enabled. If “Filter spam calls” appears, decide whether you want suspected spam filtered automatically. Filtered calls can still appear in call history and voicemail, but you may not receive the usual missed-call notification.

Privacy note: Phone by Google may send numbers outside your Contacts to Google to identify business callers or possible spam. Google says it does not receive phone numbers from your Contacts.

Some Pixel phones place spam filtering inside Call Screen protection levels instead of showing a separate filter switch. Samsung Galaxy phones, other manufacturers and mobile carriers may use different labels or their own service. If the menu in this article is missing, search your Phone app settings for “spam,” “caller ID,” “call screening” or “block,” and check the manufacturer or carrier’s current support page before enabling a paid service.

After changing a setting, review your call history and voicemail for legitimate callers that were filtered. If you are expecting an important first-time caller, choose a less restrictive option until you understand how your phone handles it. Do not make a real scam call or share a code to test protection.

Understand what the warning does not prove

A clean caller-ID display does not make a call safe. Criminals can impersonate a bank, delivery company, government office or even a number saved in your contacts. Google’s newer fake-call detection has its own Android-version and app requirements, and no detection system covers every call.

  • Do not read out a one-time code, password, card PIN or recovery code.
  • Do not install a remote-control app because an unexpected caller asks you to.
  • Do not move money to a “safe account.”
  • Do not trust urgency, threats or caller ID as proof.
  • Open the organisation’s official app or type its known website address yourself.

Use Call Screen when it is available

Call Screen can ask why someone is calling and show a transcript before you decide whether to answer. Google says the feature works on-device and its automatic modes depend on the Pixel model and supported country. If your phone offers protection levels, start with the least disruptive option and observe whether legitimate first-time callers are being screened too aggressively.

Example: you are expecting a call from a hospital using an unfamiliar number. Automatic blocking could hide an important call, while caller-ID warnings plus manual screening may let the caller explain the purpose without you immediately sharing personal information.

Treat Scam Detection as a warning, not a verdict

On eligible Pixel devices, Scam Detection can listen for conversation patterns associated with scams and alert you during the call. Google limits the feature by device, country and language. When it is enabled, it plays an audible beep at the start of the call and every few minutes. Google says processing occurs on-device and conversation audio or transcription is not stored or sent to Google. Because availability changes, follow the current on-screen explanation on your own phone rather than assuming that every Pixel or every Android phone supports it.

If you receive a warning, end the call and verify the request independently. If you receive no warning, keep the same safety rule: never approve a payment or account change solely because the caller sounds convincing.

Block and report with care

For a repeat spam number in Phone by Google, open the call entry and choose Block or Report spam. If a legitimate caller was labelled incorrectly, use Not spam and unblock the number. Blocking one displayed number does not stop an attacker from calling through another spoofed number.

A practical setup for different users

  • Someone who receives many delivery or medical calls: keep caller warnings on, but avoid the most aggressive filtering until you have checked how first-time callers are handled.
  • An older relative targeted by urgent payment scams: combine spam warnings with a family rule: end the call, then phone a trusted person or the organisation’s published number.
  • A business owner: review voicemail and filtered-call history regularly, because an unfamiliar number can still be a real customer.
  • A high-risk account holder: protect the account as well as the phone. Our two-step verification comparison explains stronger sign-in and recovery choices.

If a scammer already obtained information

Act according to what was exposed. Contact the bank or payment provider through its official channel for financial information; change a compromised password from a trusted device; revoke unexpected remote-access software; and tell the mobile carrier if the phone number or SIM may be at risk.
