Clear an app’s cache safely
Clear one app’s temporary cache when it is slow, crashing, or displaying stale content—without deliberately deleting its saved data. If your main goal is storage rather than troubleshooting, first see how to free up space without losing files.
Important: Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data. Google says clearing storage permanently deletes the app’s data.
Before you start
- Make sure you know which single app is causing the problem.
- Save any work currently open in that app.
- Expect the app’s first restart to be a little slower while temporary files are rebuilt.
Clear the app’s cache
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps. If necessary, tap See all apps.
- Select the affected app.
- Open Storage & cache or the similarly named storage option.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Open the app and check whether the problem is resolved.
If your menus look different
Android settings vary by device maker and software version. Search Settings for the app’s name, open its app information, and look for a storage or cache option. Do not assume a nearby data-deletion control is equivalent.
If clearing the cache does not help
Restart the app and phone, check for an official app update, and review the developer’s support information. Treat clearing storage, uninstalling, or resetting the phone as separate and more disruptive decisions.
